How To Make Money Selling Fishing Flies Online
Posted by: Tracy M. in Business and Management, From Home Businesses, Home Based BusinessesWhen I was looking for an online business opportunity I focused on my fishing hobby. I was looking for something that had lots of different lines that I could gradually add to and build up a big business.
Fishing flies come in countless different patterns and sizes. I sometimes tie my own flies but take about half an hour on each one! Considering a wholesale fishing fly costs around 10-20 cents I could not even start to think of supplying myself! Most reasonably priced bulk flies are tied in Africa and by far the biggest source is Kenya. I wrote to the Kenyan embassy and asked for a list of companies. This they did and I was able to obtain a number of email addresses. Within a few days I begun receiving replies and from many a few weeks later a number of samples arrived by post. It seemed quite easy so far.
I built up enough trust in one supplier to agree to sending half the cost of a trial order worth $400 in total. After a month the flies arrived and I was in the position where I could send the balance of the money, plus half of the cost of the next order. I seemed to be up and running with my business!
I was lucky with this supplier, and we kept up an amicable relationship for some time. The business itself worked out fine. I packed the flies into neat little selection boxes and sold them on eBay and a few through the angling press. I was making a small profit and so everything should have been fine. However, what I had not realized was the time needed to pack the flies. As many readers will know, they are tiny fiddly things and are awkward to sort through.
Consider that first order for example. This was around 300 boxes each holding a dozen flies of the same item. They needed transferring into selections of 12 different flies attractively mounted in their display boxes. It took ages!
So, when I lost my good supplier and found how hard it was to recruit reliable replacements, I gave up and turned my interest to more expensive carp fishing tackle. I enjoyed the hobby aspects of working with different fly fishing flies, but I will stick to using them on my own fishing rod! It is possible to make money selling fishing flies online, but you will never become a millionaire!
