*This is a guest post from a Stay at Home Mom who is making a living online.
In September 2007 I had an accident that would have a huge impact on my life. The biggest being, not my health but my ability to earn, I was unemployable. It became clear I needed to find a source of jobs for stay at home moms like me that would allow me any rest time when and should I need it. Working from home was a clear choice.
The internet became my gateway to being self employed and working from home. Working in the media and entertainment industry I was able to be at home and earn the same if not more than I was working for someone else. Of course it’s not all easy, though I only spend a few hours actually working each day I have to be available to work which generally means sitting at my computer all day. The hours are long if I want to match the income I once had and sometimes you miss having colleagues to chat too and the company of others. Would I change it if I could, actually no I wouldn’t. This was a choice made for me by my health but it has given me a freedom I could never give up. I enjoy being self employed and the power to plan my day as I see fit.
Now speeding towards the end of 2009 I am amazed at how my own personal skills have developed. And I finally found a company that is providing online data entry jobs and allow me to work and recuperate from the comfort of my home. The internet has become its own industry and the rules and business practices are different to “the real world”. I have now established myself as an experienced “work from homer”, finding jobs is easier, not because I have experience but I know where to look and what is a genuine job opportunity. Thinking back to when I first started it was quite intimidating; the internet is full of adverts “Earn money online $100 an hour” etc the reality is far from it. I quickly learned that you’re not going to get rich fast and easy online, like any job you will have to put the effort in to get your rewards. Spending long hours in front of a computer is not the glamorous freedom from the shackles of a 9 till 5 that some people hope for but it has given me a life style no other job could and for that I’m entirely grateful.
